What to do when death occurs?

If a death occurs at home in the area of Zagreb, police department should be notified (call 192) in order the Coroner be called, whose obligation is to pronounce that death has occurred.

This information should be provided:

  • name of the deceased
  • date of birth, age of the deceased
  • address of the place of death
  • time of death
  • name of the person reporting death
  • contact telephone number

The Coroner has to have access to the deceased in order that the body could be examined and all the necessary information about the deceased gathered.

The Coroner will issue a Death Certificate after which the body can be transported to the desired place of burial.

If death occurs outside the area of Zagreb, the local medical centre should be notified.
In case death occurs in a hospital or another institution within the boundaries of the Republic of Croatia, the family of the deceased can contact the department where the deceased was admitted.

After obtaining the medical documents of the deceased, usually from a doctor on call or a head of a department, it is necessary to take the clothes for the deceased to be buried in to the mortuary or the department of pathology.
